Job description

🚀MaiaSpace is a European space tech company, designing, manufacturing and operating competitive and sustainable solutions for space mobility. We are driven by the belief that access to space is a major enabler for a better and more sustainable life on Earth, addressing the challenges faced by humanity: climate, resources, connectivity, and data. Our aim is to successfully design and test a cost-effective and reusable mini-launch vehicle by 2026.🚀

Kickstage CAD Design Engineer

Maiaspace is looking for a CAD Design Engineer to join one of our agile multi-disciplinary teams in charge of the development of MaiaSpace Colibri kick-stage. Colibri has different roles. It will first play a kickstage role enhancing MaiaSpace performance and injection flexibility. Then, in midterm horizon, additional functionalities will be added to the vehicle to address in orbit services opportunities from which active debris removal is one of our main targets. This vehicle is at the crossroad between a launcher and an orbital platform.

As part of the Colibri team, your main missions and responsibilities will consist of leading the kickstage CAD layout from development phase to the test and flight readiness activities:

  • Manage CAD models of the different functional system demonstrators, mock-up and flight
    models,
  • Lead the design and numerical modeling of the secondary structures, interfaces and
implementation of the various hardware (avionic module, propulsion equipment, sensors, …),
electrical harness, fluidic and thermal subsystems (MLI, CTA, etc.), working directly with the
Mechanical Design Engineer in charge of the primary structure, who provides the associated
    3D models.
  •  Manage the overall digital model of the Colibri product and will ensure that all models are
consistent and that sub-assemblies can be integrated to provide input data for the production
    and AIT teams.
  • Propose layouts in line with the high-level technical requirements defined for the primary
structure and subsystems, and the best practices applicable to the design of space vehicles,
  • Take into account production and AIT constraints and requirements, negotiate them if
    necessary,
  • Consider "design to cost" constraints (cost, lead time, supply and integration, etc.).
  • Project in 3D different layout solutions/concepts for sub-assemblies (electrical harness, piping, thermal) and secondary structures,
  • Manage layout studies, check clashes and clearances, verify compliance with layout constraints
(proximity, field of view, etc.); manage CAD model input/output data,
  • Manage the CAD model of the Colibri platform, validate 3D models, specify to subcontractors
    and check delivered models,
  • Provide inputs for mass, centering and inertia budgets, tolerancing budget and definition and
    assembly files.
  • Monitor the manufacture of parts and support the person(s) in charge of methods and
    integration.

Job requirements

🎓 We are looking for candidates with the following experience and skills:

  • Master’s degree in General or Mechanical engineering (+5 years post-Baccalaureate)
  • At least 5 years’ experience with direct involvement in CAD design of orbital platform layout,
  • CAD tools, in particular SolidWorks, in order to be autonomous in drawing,
  • good knowledge of space environment constraints.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and thermal design, wiring and propulsion piping system,
  •  Ability to work as part of a team and flexibly with regard to a start-up environment,
  • Autonomy, rigor, good interpersonal and communication skills, proactive problem-solving
    attitude,
  • Ability to work quickly, be "solutions-oriented" and propose disruptive ideas,
  • Fluency in English, written and spoken
  • Fluency in French is preferred – at minima a willingness to learn French is required

🎬 Working at MaiaSpace
